The estate’s connection to viticulture is rooted in family tradition. Grandson of a small winegrower from Ferro, Francisco Matos Soares developed an early interest in vineyards and winemaking. He holds a degree in Agronomy from the Instituto Superior de Agronomia and built his professional career within the Ministry of Agriculture, focusing on viticultural experimentation and the study of indigenous grape varieties from the Beira Interior region.
The Quinta dos Alvercões project began in 1992 with the restructuring of an existing vineyard. Over time, new plots were established, totalling approximately 8 hectares under vine today. The estate cultivates the white varieties Síria and Fonte Cal, and the red varieties Trincadeira and Jaén, complemented by Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional. In 2024, a new plot was planted, introducing additional grape varieties. The vineyards have been managed under integrated production since 2001 and have been under conversion to organic farming since 2023.
The first vinification took place in 2021, initially using only part of the total production in an adapted artisanal winery. The first bottling occurred in 2024. In 2023, the winery facilities were expanded, enabling the vinification of the entire grape production.
At Quinta dos Alvercões, each harvest reflects a consistent commitment to precision and continuous improvement. Production retains a strong family involvement, supported by a technical approach focused on quality and on the genuine expression of terroir.
